As I look back on the past six weeks and the DOL, I begin to understand what it all truly means. My goal was to create a 4 part series on historical mathematics. While I only finished one, two more are in the process of getting created. This is no where near where I wanted to be, but I am by no means done with this and will continue to work on the series until completion.
One of the things that I did and am continuing to do is learn about some of the mathematics that are relevant to the mathematicians that I am studying. This has actually been pretty fun. I have done 3 of these and will probably do that another couple of times. The actual night was fine. I just showed the first episode and that was okay, but it didn't make any waves. In the future, if I do this again, I would probably write the outline and majority of the shows first, and then, with the script, film over a couple of days. I think that would allow me to finish more of them sooner.

What have the last two weeks been like? Well a week before this one was largely based around staring to get deeper into the Vegas Baby bolt, and beginning to really immerse myself in Byte-Sized Math and there was not very many concrete products that have come out of it. But this week some pretty intense stuff has happened. For one I found the next thing that I want to work on with Byte-Sized History. It’s called Great Zimbabwe and I hope to try and film late next week or early the week after.
In addition later today I’m going to shoot the first ep of byte-sized math. I hope to be done with that this weekend and then shoot the next part, about the Greeks, not next week but early the week after. Looking forward, the Vegas Baby Bolt is almost finished. All I have to do is take the test. The next round starts today and I’m doing three different ones. The one I’m most excited about is the writing one and with that I hope to try and write about an hour every night. I’ve already gotten a bit of a head start and have written a couple of days this week and I’m going to do that again later today. Update... Finished Filming Byte-Sized Math Ep 1. It went super well and I’m definitely getting better. By the end of the weekend I should have it on Youtube. After two weeks of getting our feet wet and getting used to the new atmosphere of Mosaic I have been able to start getting into the meat of what this year is going to be about.
Thing one is that the bolts have begun. In order receive a bit of math credit I have started Justices's math bolt. It has actually been pretty cool because I am starting to learn more about odds, and probability. The most interesting thing so far was when we had to roll two dice 100 times, and the numbers were fairly expected, but there was some unexpectedness, such as 5s appearing more often than 6s. However, when you took the data of all 12 people in the bolt, everything evened out as would be expected. The other major thing that has been started is the IBs. This time around they are 4 or 6 weeks( I keep getting different answers) and the questions are much deeper. I'm actually excited about this one because I can make it into several Byte-Sized History Episodes. My big question is: How might I teach about historical mathematics? And that flows nicely into the main topic of my question: historical mathematics. I am looking at how math has changed and evolved over time and the effects that has had on civilization. IN addition, as I am going through some books Justice gave me I find concepts that I find interesting and then the two of us go over them and look at the math involved in them. I will keep working on both of these things while continuing to plug away at Byte-Sized History. The French Revolution episode ran into some problems so I am going to have to rethink my approach. In the mean time I will start work on another episode. Maybe Masada. I just don't know. In doing this high school thing for 3 years and in Mosaic for two of those, I came into these first two weeks with a certain expectation. See, for the past years in Mosaic we started with a massive project, usually lasting upwards of a month and in general taking a lot of time and energy. Sadly both of those were not exactly the most fluid, or the best experiences and Ii came into this year fearing that my first month would be spent on what I see as a waste of time.Thankfully, my fears have been quelled and these first two weeks have been a great example of what Mosaic truly is. After the first day of introductions and preparations the remaining days were spent on some very fun and creative projects, each lasting only a single day so as not to stale, but still enough to leave us potentially wanting to continue. The first day was spent designing a product for an extraordinary person. For example our customer was a vampire teen, while other groups had people like a Knight, or a queen. From there we then given a kind of product that we had to design and then sell. After that we had to make some sort of poster like we were trying to sell this to our extraordinary person. The project itself was not really my thing, but it got me thinking and it is preparing me to think outside of the box for the rest of the year.Day 2 was spent in the Makerspace and I have little to say about this. Our task was to take separate things and then try and turn them into something new. We took a old gas lamp and hooked up cords and a light bulb and made a electric lamp. It was cool but again that kind of thing doesn’t really interest me. However, on day three of these mini projects is where I really hit my stride. Our task was to create a short movie about whatever, and I had a blast writing, directing, filming, and later that night editing. Our film was an incredibly sleazy infomercial for Mosaic and I think that it turned out fantastic. Really I just love anything to do with filming. And after being unable to do it all summer, it helped me get back into the feel and techniques of videography. It is week two of Mosaic that I really feel as though I am hitting my stride. We began our first mock inquiry block, and I am able to turn in into a new episode of Byte-Sized History. It is really a great feeling that I am able to truly able to dive into the year and be able to start the thing that I really love, that being both history and filming. In addition to starting IB’s, we also began the house cup, which is a relatively friendly competition between advisement, and so far our group is tied for first place.Overall these first days have been very fun and I can’t wait to really dive deep into the rest of the year.
